Sensex closes 138 points up, Nifty below 10,400 as BJP set to win Himachal, Gujarat elections

BSE Sensex closed higher by 138.71 points to 33,601.68, while the Nifty 50 rose 55.50 points to close at 10,388.75. Here are the latest updates

MUMBAI : Mumbai: The BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty closed higher on Monday as final voting trends showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning in both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. All the sectoral indices on BSE, except realty and energy, ended higher led by metal, which was up 1.83%, and auto 1.21%. On NSE, the Nifty PSU Banks rallied 2.38%. M&M, Sun Pharma, SBI and Wipro were top gainers today, whereas Yes Bank, Coal India and Infosys shares fell. The rupee recovered from early losses, but was still trading marginally lower against the US dollar, while bond yield hit a fresh 16-month high.

Sectoral indices

Rupee trades lower against US dollar

The Indian rupee on Monday recovered some of its losses but was still trading marginally lower against the US dollar after vote counting trends indicated BJP’s victory in both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. At 2.02pm, the home currency was trading at 64.11 a dollar, down 0.11% from its Friday’s close of 64.05. The 10-year bond yield was at 7.162%, a level last seen on 3 August 2016, compared to its previous close of 7.134%.

Future Supply Chain rises nearly 2% on market debut

Sensex, Nifty tank

BSE Sensex opened lower by 531.93 points, or 1.59%, to 32,931.04, while the Nifty 50 fell 217.30 points, or 2.10%, to 10,115.95.
