Live: Rupee closes weaker against dollar at 63.72

Here are the key developments affecting the domestic and international markets today

7:10pm: According to a Reuters report, US stocks opened slightly lower on Monday as the market awaited homebuilder sentiment data that could feed into the Federal Reserve’s assessment on how soon to raise rates.

The National Association of Homebuilders’ monthly confidence index, due at 10 am ET (1400 GMT), is expected to show a slight rise.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1.97 points, or 0.01%, to 18,270.59, the S&P 500 lost 1.9 points, or 0.09%, to 2,120.83 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 7.77 points, or 0.15%, to 5,040.52.

5:00pm: The Indian rupee closes weaker against dollar at 63.72, compared with its previous close of 63.52.

3:30pm: The S&P BSE Sensex closes 1.33%, or 363.30 points, higher at 27,687.30, while the CNX Nifty closes 1.35%, or 111.30 points, higher at 8,373.65.

3:15pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading 1.45%, or 397.43 points, higher at 27,721.43, while the CNX Nifty has added 1.45%, or 119.75 points, to trade at 8,382.10.

After gaining 3.5%, shares of Asian Paints erased all the gains and were trading 2.91% lower at 767 apiece on BSE after the company reported weaker-than-expected earnings. Consolidated net profit for the March quarter rose 18.6% from a year ago to 340.97 crore. A Bloomberg poll estimated that the company may post net profit of 378 crore. Net sales rose 6.9% to 3,490.39 crore.

3:11pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading 1.34%, or 364.96 points, higher at 27,688.96, while the CNX Nifty has added 1.29%, or 106.95 points, to trade at 8,369.30.

3:03pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading 1.10%, or 301.23 points, higher at 27,625.23, while the CNX Nifty has added 1.06%, or 87.55 points, to trade at 8,349.90.

2:29pm: Among the Sensex stocks, Tata Power Co. Ltd advances to a two-week high to become the top performer (up 2.9%), while Bajaj Auto Ltd increased for a third day (up 1.15%). Hindalco Industries Ltd rose to a one-week high (up 1.42%). Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd is also one of the top performers on the Sensex (up 2.76%).

2:28pm: The S&P BSE Sensex gains further in afternoon trade, jumping 208.23 points, or 0.76%, to 27,532.23.

2:00pm: Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd shares inch up 1% after the company got shareholders’ approval to raise up to 13,000 crore from domestic and external sources during the current fiscal year. “The shareholders of the company has approved special resolution to raise funds in Indian rupee or any other acceptable foreign currency as permitted by RBI up to 13,000 crore from domestic/external sources," the company has said in a BSE filing today.

1:20pm: Sterlite Technologies Ltd shares surge as much as 9.4% to 69.30 after the company said in a notice to BSE that its net profit jumped 285.52% in the March quarter to 39.13 crore compared with 10.15 crore a year ago. Net sales rose 54.3% to 962.3 crore.

1:08pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading 126.48 points, or 0.46%, higher at 27,450.48.

12:45pm: Asian Paints shares jump as much as 3.4% ahead of the company’s March quarter earnings due later today.

11:51am: The S&P BSE Sensex is steady at 27,431.66, up 107.66, or 0.39%.

11:30am: Shares of fuel retailers jump after they raised diesel prices by 2.71 per liter and petrol prices by 3.13 per liter after market hours on Friday. Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOC) is up 1.5%, Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd (HPCL) jumps 3.7%, while Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd (BPCL) gains 2.5%.

10:44am: The BSE Sensex is now trading at 27,469.62, up 145.62 points, or 0.53%. Meanwhile, the CNX Nifty is trading at 8,303.50, up 41.15 points, or 0.5%.

10:30am: Options on India’s Nifty indicate that the index would move between 8,000 and 8,500 in May, according to Reuters calculations. Maximum open interest in May’s call options held at 8,500 level with 5.26 million shares, says NSE data. Puts hold highest positions at 8,000 level with 5.08 million shares.

10:00am: Delhi-based Funny Software Ltd, which is into offering IT services, consulting and business solutions, has entered the capital market with a public issue of 3.28 million equity shares of 10 each at a fixed price of 14 apiece, aggregating 4.59 crore. The shares are proposed to be listed on the BSE SME platform, a company statement said. The issue opened on 14 May and will close on 20 May.

9:44am: The S&P BSE Sensex rises further to 27,451.47, up 127.47 points, or 0.47%.

9:42am: Jain Irrigation shares jump 11.62% to 63.40 after its fourth quarter net profit beats estimates. Consolidated net profit for the quarter rises 30.78% to 98.53 crore from 75.34 crore for the same quarter last year. A Bloomberg poll of three analysts had estimated a consolidated net profit of 65.13 crore. Read more.

9:40am: Zuari Global Ltd gains 1.41% to 93.50 as the group looks set to have a majority stake of over 53% in Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd (MCFL), following reports that its open offer to buy 36.56% share in the Vijay Mallya-led UB group firm for nearly 400 crore has been successful. Zuari was competing with Deepak Fertilisers for taking control of MCFL since July 2013, but the latter withdrew from the race and has been selling shares of MCFL through the open market.

9:37am: Bharti Airtel Ltd is up 0.33% to 393.75 as it signed agreements to raise up to $2.5 billion from Chinese banks, reports The Economic Times. The company plans to invest these funds in data networks, the report says.

9:35am: Earnings today—Asian Paints Ltd, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India Ltd.

9:32am: Losers—Coal India Ltd is down 0.2% to 365.40, while Wipro Ltd falls 0.16% to 537.35.

9:30am: Gainers—ONGC gains 1.28% to 138.80 per share, Gail India Ltd is up 0.84% to 382.90 and Dr Reddy Laboratories Ltd rises 0.5% to 3,509.20.

9:28am: The BSE oil and gas index is the top sectoral gainer, up 1.01%, followed by the healthcare index, up 0.51%.

9:23am: The Sensex is trading up 0.36%, or 98.54 points, at 27,422.54 points, while the National Stock Exchange’s broader barometer 50-share Nifty is up 0.26%, or 21.85 points, at 8,284.20 points.

9:20am: India’s equity markets open higher led by gains in oil and gas and healthcare stocks.

9:18am: The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond was trading at 7.924% compared with its Friday’s close of 7.945%.

9:15am: The Indian rupee opens little changed at 63.47 per dollar compared with its previous close of 63.52 as dealers awaited fresh economic data to take dollar positions. Read more.

9:10am: The dollar index stood at 93.435, rising slight in early Asian trade on Monday, but was still near the four-month low of 93.133 hit on Thursday.

9:07am: Oil prices held firm on supply concerns in the Middle East following fighting in Iraq and Yemen, with Brent futures standing at $66.84 per barrel

9:03am: Asian shares struggle on Monday after soft data raised more questions about the health of the US economy. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan is little changed while Japan’s Nikkei share average edges up just 0.1%, despite stronger-than-expected orders.

9:00am: Wall Street shares stood near record highs on Friday, with S&P 500 closing at record high for a straight session at 2,122.73. US shares were helped by the weak data to some extent, as it reinforced expectations the Federal Reserve will wait for longer before raising interest rates.

8:55am: US industrial production unexpectedly fell for a fifth straight month in April while consumer confidence dropped to a seven-month low in early May, data showed on Friday, pushing down the dollar and US bond yields.
