A test run with one of the UPI-enabled apps that went live on the Google Play Store on Thursday
On Thursday, National Payment Corp. of India (NPCI) asked banks to go live with unified payment interface (UPI). We did a test run with one of the UPI-enabled apps that went live.
Here is how it works: Firstly, you need to have an Android smartphone, a bank account and registered mobile number linked to your bank account. We downloaded the UPI-enabled Axis Pay app from the Google Play Store on a Lenovo K3 50A40 smartphone.
Once you open the app, you have to click on the start button. Once you enter your name and create a six-digit passcode, you are immediately registered on Axis Pay. To send money, you have to register your bank details.
To register, click on the left hand side of the page and you will get a drop down menu. Click on manage account. It will ask you to add your bank name. We selected ICICI Bank Ltd and it automatically populated the bank account details displaying last four digits of the bank account number with a blank space to create your virtual ID. In this case, we entered name@axisbank. When we proceeded, it asked for debit card details. You can also request for OTP.
We requested OTP and entered it to create an MPIN.
Then we went back to the main page and clicked on send option. Next, we tapped on the my account option and it linked to the account that we added.
In the receiver option, we looked for a bank account that is not yet on UPI list—HDFC Bank Ltd. It gave us two options: virtual payment address and bank account number and IFSC code. We chose the latter. Once you enter the details and the amount, you are directed to a page to enter remark. Next, we entered the MPIN that we created, and the transaction went through.
