India’s coffee exports in 2012 so far display mixed trends, with arabica varieties showing an uptick in exports, while robustas are faced with a decline. The dullness in exports comes at a time when the international prices of coffee beans have tumbled, with arabicas suffering the most, while robustas have got off lightly.

July saw prices recover, but hopes that it would sustain were dashed in August. Slower growth in exports, rise in labour and fuel costs, and depressed international prices do not make for a good scenario for exporters. A strong dollar offers some solace.
