Market Wrap: Sensex closes at 36140, Nifty ends 1% higher led by metal, PSU bank stocks

BSE Sensex closed higher by 341.97 points at 36,139.98, while the Nifty 50 rose 117.50 points to close at 11,083.70. Here are the highlights from markets
Mumbai: Benchmark indices closed at fresh record highs led by rallying metal and public sector bank stocks. The NSE Nifty closed above the 11,000 mark, while the BSE Sensex ended above the 36,000 level for the first time. In the intraday trade, Sensex jumped 372.82 points to hit a fresh record high of 36,170.83, and the Nifty surged 126.70 points to hit an all-time high of 11,092.90. The record high gains were led by metal and banking stocks with Nifty Metal rising 4.07% and the Nifty PSU Bank surging 3.97%. All the sectoral indices on BSE ended higher. In the 30-share Sensex basket, SBI, Tata Steel, ONGC and ICICI Bank were top gainers, whereas Wipro, Tata Motors, Asian Paints and HDFC Bank were major losers. Force Motors net profit declines in Q3
Force Motors Ltd reported a net profit RS14.65 crore in the December 2017 quarter compared to a profit of Rs23.25 crore a year ago. Revenue from operations stood at Rs750 crore in the third quarter, up from Rs716 crore last year. Shares traded 1.98% up at Rs3360.

ONGC gets govt nod to sell stake in IOC, GAIL to fund HPCL buy
Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd has received approval from the government to sell its stake in Indian Oil Corp. Ltd and GAIL India Ltd to help fund the Rs36,915 crore acquisition of Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd. ONGC shares rose 3.53% to Rs207, whereas HPCL shares dipped 1.94% to Rs393.95.

Rupee trades higher against US dollar
The Indian rupee strengthened marginally against the US dollar as local equity markets continued to hit fresh record highs. At 2.10pm, the home currency was trading at 63.83 a dollar, up 0.10% from its Monday’s close of 63.87.

Symphony Q3 profit rises to Rs66.31 crore
Symphony Ltd said its December quarter net profit rose to Rs66.31 crore versus a profit Rs54.93 crore a year ago. The company’s revenue from operations increased to Rs218 crore in the third quarter versus Rs180 crore in the same period a year ago. Shares traded 0.08% up at Rs1988.

Hester Biosciences Ltd shares jumped 7.10% to Rs1,737.90 after the company said its December quarter profit rose to Rs6.5 crore versus a profit Rs5.82 crore a year ago. The company’s net sales stood at Rs31.93 crore versus Rs29.09 crore last year.

Axis Bank shares trade higher on Q3 result

Rupee opens marginally higher against US dollar
The Indian rupee strengthened marginally against the US dollar on Tuesday as local equity markets continued to hit fresh record highs. The rupee opened at 63.90 a dollar, and was trading at 63.82 a dollar, up 0.08% from its Monday’s close of 63.87. The 10-year bond yield was at 7.298% compared to its previous close of 7.264%.
