On corporates turning up as big funders of political parties

At a time when Indian politicians are under the scanner, it is heartening to note that the Sisyphean efforts of the Association for Democratic Reforms have resulted in the disclosure of their annual income-tax returns for whatever they are worth.

As a result, we now know that Indian corporates are turning up as big funders of political parties. The good news is that it is a small, yet important step in ushering in transparency in donations to political parties.

But the bad news is that everyone knows that there is “nothing official" about the funding of political parties. The raft of scandals that has surfaced over the last few years offers enough pointers to the unofficial line of funding open to political parties. The expensive electoral campaigns and the cash seizures by the Election Commission only further confirms the hypocrisy of the income-tax disclosures.
