The land of the singles is a gift that my misery had just refused to let me see

Ever played scrabble by yourself? It’s highly entertaining, there’s no cheating and the board looks like a road map of all the words you didn’t know you knew. Here’s a list of all the stupid, silly, happy things I love to do in Singledom.

Order food and eat straight from the carton, without transferring it into a plate, that now doesn’t have to be washed, as it’s squeaky clean, unmarked by colourful curries.

Be comatose through an entire weekend without moving a muscle. There is no pressure to do ‘something’, be ‘interesting’ or engage with any other mortal being.

Fire cooks, drivers, gardeners, the istriwala and anybody else I hired without a second opinion. Without a debate about why we should forgive his burning of my paid-an-arm-leg-and-half-a-neck-top as the man does collars well.

Go for a walk in the rain because I ‘feel like it’. In fact it was possible to do all my ‘I feel like it’ impulses without giving a single thought to queries like ‘Do you have to?’ ‘Is it sensible?’ ‘Why now?’ and other questions that curtail random acts of indulgence.

It is a universal fact that it is impossible to fight with oneself. Days and days of peace at home without raised voices and glowering unsaid accusations is such bliss.

Having an ice cream when I had fever. Guiltily sneaking to the fridge and shoving delicious spoonfuls of cold ice-cream that would melt in my burning mouth. I did cough gallons more after that but luckily I didn’t catch pneumonia.

No more obligatory smiles at his-friend-I-hate. In fact no more obligatory anything.

Not letting my happy mood be influenced by somebody else’s unhappy mood. When I wake up happy, I stay happy.

Making decisions fearlessly and without second opinions. And you know what? It was great. I quickly realised that hiring a particular cable operator over another wasn’t really going to make such a deep, unalterable change to my life. Over time, I even wondered why I had a need to consult the now non-existent half on everything.

The comforting coziness of going somewhere, sitting alone, sipping that slow coffee, chasing my thoughts, without being interrupted by a call stating with reverie-breaking tones, “Where are you?"

Listening to that one song, play over and over again on loop, through the night, as loud as I want. Of course, I hear the neighbours moved out after that night.

Moving from Coupledom to Singledom wasn’t easy, but after the tears had disappeared and the heart got bored of being sad, I began to realise that the land of the singles is a gift that my misery had just refused to let me see.

Sometimes I think that singles forget how glorious freedom is. What can be so bad about having the luxury to do whatever I want, whenever I want? What can be so heartbreaking about fulfilling every single impulse of my heart? What was terrible was the process of the divorce, not its aftermath.
