Haryana: Smitten by Narendra Modi, loyal to Hooda

Whatever it is, Congress's Deepender Singh Hooda seems to be on a comfortable wicket in Rohtak

Voters in Rohtak, Haryana, are smitten by Narendra Modi. Businessmen, traders and labourers want Modi to become the prime minister so that he can bring change. They are vocal about the rise in prices of essential commodities and rampant corruption in the regime of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance. Yet, when it comes to voting, they favour Deepender Singh Hooda, the sitting Congress member of Parliament (MP) and son of chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Farmer Jatinder Singh talks about the election.

What’s your expectation from this election?

People want a change. A majority of the voters in Haryana want a change.

What about Haryana?

In Haryana, Deepender will win this seat, because he worked for this constituency. But people want Modi as the prime minister. In our area, both Hooda (chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda) and Deepender are our favourites.

But how will Modi become the prime minister if you do not vote for the BJP candidate here?

Lots of people want Modi to become the prime minister. But Deepender has done a lot for this constituency. I too will vote for Deepender.

Why do you think Modi can bring change?

That’s the popular voice. But for our area, Deepender has done a lot for us. I am just telling you what the people think.

So does your family also think the same?

Yes, my family also thinks the same. So our votes will go to Deepender only.

Do you think another candidate would have been better for the BJP? (Om Prakash Dhankar is BJP’s candidate in Rohtak)

No. The BJP candidate is good here. But we will vote for Deepender only. It’s a question of Deepender’s victory and we cannot make any compromise on it.

What about the other constituencies in Haryana?

Voters are in favour of Modi.

What did Deepender do for your constituency?

Well, he is a very nice man. Anybody goes to him, he would listen to him. You can go and see... He will listen to everyone. If you ask anyone in this area, they would say how nice a person Deepender is!

What about the allegations of corruption against the Congress leaders and the price rise?

I don’t know about it. Anyway what can Deepender alone do to fight corruption. Corruption is everywhere. Common man is also corrupt.

Don’t you like the Aam Aadmi Party?

Yes, I know. He (Arvind Kejirwal) is good, he tried to fight against corruption. But what he did in Delhi was not good. He should not have run away. What to do? Corruption is not something that a single man can fight and resolve. There are too many corrupt men around. One man cannot do anything.

Naresh Kumar, a shopkeeper in Rohtak city, said people are too scared to vote against the Hoodas. “Everyone here knows who runs the show here. So no one would dare to go against them," he said.

Whatever it is, Deepender Hooda seems to be on a comfortable wicket in Rohtak. That’s saying quite a lot because Congress MPs in Haryana, just like their counterparts in other states, are facing a tough fight to retain their constituencies.
