Burning for jobs

Burning for jobs

For the 150,000 youths who gathered in Bareilly over the last few days hoping for a place in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the scuttled recruitment drive and the ensuing rampage were symbolic of a larger reality. The Armed Forces present a rare job opportunity for thousands at a time when public sector job creation is lethargic, and the private sector gets restricted play. The problem will get more complicated in the coming decade as millions more look for jobs on the back of a surging demographic wave. Unless their demands are met, burnt buses will be the least of the country’s problems.
