The ongoing crisis in Ukraine is another reminder that some things do not change in global politics. It was a similar Russian quest for control of a warm-water port that led to war against an alliance of powers for control of Crimea in the 1850s. The Crimean War will strike a bell in the minds of anybody who has learnt about the charge of the light brigade in school or the compassion of Florence Nightingale.
Some cynics may even say that India today mirrors the situation in the 18th century, with a weak Shah Alam on the Delhi throne while chaos ruled around him as the Marathas, Rohillas, Sikhs, Jats, British and many others fought for control of Hindustan. We hope the cynics are wrong.
