India’s demographic window of opportunity
The Indian working age population will peak 35 years after the Chinese working age population peaks
China is battling several problems right now: a financial markets collapse, a real estate bubble, rising wages, a public debt problem that is hidden from view and slowing growth.
But the biggest structural change in China is in its demographics. Its working age population is expected to peak this year. China will have nearly 210 million fewer workers by 2050. India will add 285 million to its working age population over the same period.
The Indian working age population will peak 35 years after the Chinese working age population peaks. Taking advantage of this demographic window of opportunity will need economic reforms to encourage creating jobs, providing skills training to the growing labour force and improving the quality of human capital by addressing issues such as malnutrition.
