The arrest of the three could mark a breakthrough in investigations into a string of train accidents that could prove to be the work of saboteurs

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday sent three suspects in a case of attempted railway sabotage to police remand until they are produced before a special NIA court on 14 February, said NIA spokesperson Alok Mittal.

The arrest of the three could mark a breakthrough in investigations into a string of train accidents that could prove to be the work of saboteurs, the NIA official said.

“NIA has sent the three accused in the Motihari case to police custody. They will now be produced before a special NIA court next week and we will take the investigation forward from there," said NIA spokesperson Alok Mittal.

In January, the Bihar police arrested the three men—Moti Paswan, Uma Shanker Patel and Mukesh Yadav—who had suspected links with Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence.

During interrogation, the men claimed they had been paid Rs3 lakh for planting an improvised explosive device (IED) that was found and defused on the railway track in Ghorasahan, in Bihar’s East Champaran district, in October. Investigations by Bihar police revealed one of them had travelled to Kanpur and orchestrated the derailment of the Indore-Patna Express near Kanpur in November which killed nearly 150 people.

On 26 January, the ministry of home affairs handed over the Ghorasahan probe to NIA.

On Tuesday evening, an NIA official said the alleged mastermind of the Indore-Patna train derailment had been arrested by the police in Nepal. “Dubai-based Shamsul Huda, who acted as the alleged conspirator for Kanpur train accident, was arrested by the police in Nepal, after being deported from Dubai," said a senior NIA official, requesting anonymity.
