New Delhi: The ministry of urban development has issued a notice to the Indian National Congress (INC) asking it to vacate the party headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, and three other properties in central Delhi.

The move may further sour the Congress’s relations with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) just ahead of the budget session. The BJP is seeking support from the Congress party to clear crucial legislation, including a bill to raise foreign direct investment (FDI) in insurance companies to 49%.

Opposition parties have the power to block legislation in the Rajya Sabha where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is in a minority with just 57 members out of the total of 245 members.

The ministry of urban development in a statement said, “It is because, Congress Party was handed over possession of land at 9-A, Rouse Avenue, in June 2010 and as per the policy, the party was required to vacate the four bungalows...within three years i.e June 2013, which was not done."

The ministry directed the Congress party to vacate its headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, the Seva Dal office at 26, Akbar Road, the office of Youth Congress at 5, Raisina Road, and a bungalow in Chanakyapuri.

“The ministry of urban development in January had informed the Congress Party that the said allocation has been cancelled with effect from June 2013 and it will be charged damage rate of license fee from June 2013 for the said bungalows till they are vacated, as per the policy."

The Congress had sought three years to vacate these properties after it received the eviction notice, the statement said. The minister for urban development and parliamentary affairs, M. Venkaiah Naidu has directed ministry officials to examine the request of the Congress party.

“It is hardly a day since we have received it. The party will deal with very strongly and comprehensively," said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

The notice says, “The above mentioned allotments of general pool bungalows are hereby cancelled with effect from 28 June 2013, after allowing concessional period of three years from the date of handing over of the possession of land." “From 26 June 2013 to the date of vacation of the above bungalows, Indian National Congress is liable to pay the damage date of licence fee," the notice said. The notice was issued on 22 January 2015.
