After eight days of talks in Lausanne, Switzerland, diplomats from Iran and the P5 + 1 countries (The US, China, Russia, France and the UK, along with Germany) have reached a broad political understanding that will see Iran scale down its nuclear programme for the next 15 years. The framework also means that international inspectors will now have access to Iran’s nuclear facilities. In exchange, the US and the European Union will lift sanctions on Iran, once the latter fulfils its part of the deal i.e. “addressing nuclear concerns". The negotiators have also set themselves a deadline of 30 June for translating Thursday’s framework into a final agreement.

For a start, here’s the framework agreed in Lausanne at a glance.

And here’s how we comprehended the talks in Lausanne and their potential implications.

1) What you need to know about Iran’s economy: A brief on the state of the Iranian economy and the opportunities for both Iran and the world powers once sanctions are lifted.

2) Nuclear Curse: Our opinion piece on the implications of a potential deal between Iran and world powers, especially its impact on oil prices, and other Arab states.

3) Iran reserves coveted by big oil after decades of conflict: Written before Thursday’s framework was agreed, the story is about how Iran, which holds the world’s fourth largest proven crude oil reserves, could emerge as an attractive prize for big oil once sanctions are lifted.

4) The fight for primacy in West Asia: Our opinion piece on the several issues in West Asia, including the Saudi offensive against Yemen’s Houthis, a proxy war with Iran. Also, why Iran’s nuclear deal is bad news for the Saudis.

5) Grand bargaining with Iran: Carl Bildt, Sweden’s former prime minister, writes that Iran must move away from its confrontationist past to a more cooperative future, to play a more productive role in the region
