New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released the first list of candidates for next month’s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, including a mix of sitting legislators and fresh faces.

In Uttar Pradesh, which goes to polls in seven phases starting 11 February, BJP has declared names of 149 candidates.

“We have given special attention that all sections of the society and people from all walks of life have been covered in this list. There has been a discussion on all the seats. We do not give a caste-wise break-up, but adequate representation has been given," senior BJP leader and Union minister J.P. Nadda told reporters on Monday.

The list of names includes former Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Laxmikant Vajpayee, grandson of former chief minister Kalyan Singh and party’s national secretary Shrikant Sharma.

“We will hold a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) to decide on the names for the remaining seats," Nadda added.

In the hill state of Uttarakhand which goes to polls on 15 February, the party has named 64 candidates for the 70-seat assembly, including 30 sitting MLAs. The list also includes Congress rebel leaders who have joined the BJP.

The names were decided by the central election committee on Sunday which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah, and Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley.

Analysts say the aspirations of the youth will be crucial for the party in Uttar Pradesh.

“It is a crucial poll for the BJP. They have big stakes in the state elections. Seeing the fresh faces in the list, what has to be seen is to what extent the party has accommodated the aspirations of the youth," said Ramesh Dixit, a Uttar Pradesh-based political analyst and former professor of political science at Lucknow University.

The party also announced six more candidates for the assembly polls in Punjab, four of whom are sitting MLAs. The party has announced candidates for 23 seats out of 117 it is contesting.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Monday too announced its list of 10 candidates for Punjab including former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh contesting from Lambi as well as Patiala and Navjot Singh Sidhu, who joined the party on Sunday, from Amritsar East.
