11,453 cases of crime against women reported in UP


New Delhi: Over 11,000 cases of crimes against women, 3,782 cases of crime against SC and 24 cases of crimes against STs were reported in the first seven months of the year in UP, Rajya Sabha was informed on 5 December.

As per statistics available with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were a total of 11,453 cases of crimes against women from January to July in the state, Minister of State for Home Affairs Manikrao H Gavit said.

Though police and public order are state subjects, Ministry of Home Affairs has from time to time issued advisories to all state governments and Union Territories administrations requesting them to give more attention to improving the administration of criminal justice system, he said.

Dowry death: A total of 7026 cases of dowry deaths were reported in 2004, 6787 cases in 2005 and 7618 cases in 2006 in the country, Gavit said quoting NCRB statistics.

Fencing: NBCC has been asked to execute fencing work from Barmapara to Mahamayachar along Indo-Bangladesh border. Joint survey has been done by BSF and NBCC to fix the alignment for the fencing, Minister of State for Home Affairs V Radhika Selvi said.

Reform: Ministry of Women and Child Development constituted an inquiry committee to investigate into the sexual abuse and killing of children in Nithari. No study report from JNU study team on alleged police-politician nexus in Nithari case was received by them. This was stated by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal.
