Supreme Court rejects PIL seeking CBI probe against Goa miners
The court was not impressed as a similar case on Goa mining has already been heard by it
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against iron ore miners in Goa.
A bench comprising justices J.S. Khehar and C. Nagappan rejected the writ petition filed by non-governmental organization Goa Paryavaran Savrakshan Sangharsh Samitee, which sought a CBI probe and consequent penal action against all major Goa-based miners.
The petitioner alleged that the miners had caused a loss of over ₹ 177,000 crore to the Goa government.
The court, however, was not impressed as a similar case on the Goa mining has already been heard by it.
In 2014, the apex court had declared that mining done by companies in Goa after 22 November 2007 was illegal because of the expiry of renewals of deemed mining permits.
