Arvind Kejriwal meets President over JNU row
Kejriwal meets President to discuss law and order situation in Delhi following JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar's arrest on sedition charges
New Delhi: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal along with his cabinet ministers on Thursday met President Pranab Mukherjee to discuss the law and order situation in Delhi following the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges.
“I have updated the President about the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. We want to ask the centre to take stock of the situation. There is still time," Kejriwal told reporters after the meeting.
On Wednesday, journalists and students who came for the hearing in the case at the Patiala House Courts Complex were attacked by lawyers for the second time.
Kejriwal blamed the centre for inaction: “Why are O.P. Sharma (BJP MLA) and other goons, who beat up journalists still roaming free? The entire force is with the central government. If the central government cannot arrest four students, how will they get those behind the Pathankot attacks?"
“It is unfortunate that anti-national slogans were raised but why has the central government not been able to arrest them for so long?" Kejriwal asked.
Following the attack on journalists and JNU students on 15 February, the Supreme Court had restricted entry in the Patiala House Courts Complex where Kanhaiya Kumar was to be brought for hearing. Despite the apex court’s intervention, journalists and Kumar were attacked on Wednesday.
“If the Supreme Court’s directions are violated within 200 metres of its building, then the Constitution and law cannot be upheld. Then there will a dictatorship of the central government and the Prime Minister. This is a very dangerous for the country," Kejriwal said.
