New Delhi: To increase synergy and ensure greater participation of state governments ruled by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), key alliance constituent, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has decided to organize a series of conferences on key schemes of the Union government.

The conferences will kick off with one on the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (save daughters, educate daughters) programme in New Delhi on Saturday.

The conference will be attended by women and child development ministers and ministers of state and will identify ways to promote the scheme in the states ruled by the alliance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme on 22 January in Panipat, Haryana.

“BJP is a party that promotes good governance. Women’s issues pertain not only to women but to the entire society. Of all the gender issues, imbalance in sex ratio is critical. Our conference will deliberate on this subject and also give impetus to the Beti Bachao campaign by showcasing ways to prevent female foeticide," said Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, BJP vice-president in charge of the conference.

“Sensitivity towards human suffering is at the core of our idea of good governance," Sahasrabuddhe added.

The conference will be chaired by Union women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi.

Some of the worst performers with regard to child sex ratio, such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, are ruled by the NDA.

BJP leaders pointed out that the Union government has identified the 100 most-affected districts in the country and these will get special focus to improve their child sex ratio.

The conference is also an attempt by the central government to gather ideas from various state governments to further push the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative.

“Ministers and ministers of state of 11 state governments will take part in the conference, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh where the BJP is in alliance," Sahasrabuddhe added.

Another initiative that the BJP intends to promote is the Swachh Bharat scheme. Senior party leaders said that after the conference on Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, one on Swachh Bharat will be held.

However, political analysts say that the BJP leadership should have invited representatives of all state governments rather than make it a party or alliance-centric initiative.

“This is a welcome step, but the only question is why the Union government has not called all state governments?" asked A.K. Verma, a Kanpur-based analyst and political science professor at Christ Church College.

“The issues concern every citizen and the government should have called all state governments. This is not a party-specific initiative," Verma added.
