India’s ranking among 144 economies in the latest Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) has fallen for the sixth consecutive year to 71, from 60 in the last survey, even as the number of countries polled dropped from 148. It is the lowest ranked economy in the so-called Brics group comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The World Economic Forum (WEF), which releases the rankings, said India performs best in more complex areas such as innovation (49) and business sophistication (57) and lags behind in the more fundamental drivers of competitiveness, such as health and primary education (89). China continues to lead the Brics group with the 28th rank, followed by Russia (53), South Africa (56) and Brazil (57).
