Smriti Irani dropped as HRD minister as Narendra Modi reshuffles cabinet

Two years into his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday carried out a major reshuffle and expansion of the Union cabinet based on the principle of realpolitik and individual performance.

Modi, however, kept the nucleus of decision-making within the government—the finance, defence, home, road transport and external affairs ministries—untouched.

But he signalled a premium on performance by reducing the responsibilities of some high-profile ministers, including cabinet ministers Smriti Irani and Ravi Shankar Prasad. Read more.

As 19 new ministers of state took oath, the only one to be elevated to the cabinet rank was Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar. The list of newly appointed ministers of state includes three from poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, three each from Rajasthan and Gujarat, two from Maharashtra (excluding Javadekar), one from Uttarakhand and one from Assam. Also, representatives from two allies—Anupriya Patel from Apna Dal in Uttar Pradesh and Ramdas Athawale from Republic Party of India—got inducted. Read more.

Ahead of UP polls, Sheila Dikshit says open to any role Congress gives her

Not ruling herself out as the Congress party’s choice to lead its campaign for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls in 2017, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday also batted for Priyanka Gandhi as the face of the party for the elections.

“Let’s not be presumptuous and wait for the announcement to be made by the party. I will assume whatever role the party thinks befits me," Dikshit said in an interaction with the media at the capital’s Indian Women’s Press Corps. Read more.

Ramesh Jigajinagi: Dalit parliamentarian who doesn’t go to temples

Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi on Tuesday took oath as a minister of state in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, the only addition from the south in Tuesday’s cabinet expansion.

The 64-year-old Jigajinagi, member of a scheduled caste, is MP from North Karnataka’s Bijapur. He has won five Lok Sabha elections in a row, and previously served as a legislator in the state assembly for three terms and as a state revenue minister. Read more.

Ramdas Athawale: poet, painter, ex-Dalit Panther

Ramdas Bandu Athawale, 57, president of the Republican Party of India (Athawale faction) and Rajya Sabha MP nominated by the BJP from Maharashtra, is arguably the most potent mass leader in Dalit politics in Maharashtra. His rivals—B.R. Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar and Vidarbha-based Jogendra Kawade—never compared well with Athawale in terms of popularity with the Dalit masses. Read more.
