New Delhi: An extension in registration window for the Common Admission Test (CAT) by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) seems to have done the trick. IIMs have received 218,664 applications for the entrance test this year recording a five-year high.

According to IIM Ahmedabad, the total number of registrations for CAT was 183,032 on 20 September when the original deadline for registration ended. IIM-A extended the deadline that day for five more days.

At the end of 25 September, the number of registrations jumped to a five-year high. “Total CAT registrations this year is 218,664. The response is very good when compared to last year’s registrations—195,943," the CAT centre at IIM Ahmedabad said in an email.

In fact, this is the highest registration number since 2010, when the number of total applicants was 204,000.

This was the second consecutive year when IIMs extended their registration window for the CAT exam. CAT is the gateway to win a seat in the 19 IIMs and other leading business schools in India, including the management departments of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

In a bid to improve the chances of entry for non-engineering students, IIMs have already announced the introduction of non-multiple choice-type questions.

In addition, this year, the CAT exam will have three sections—quantitative aptitude, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and verbal and reading comprehension—instead of just two sections—quantitative ability and data interpretation, and verbal ability and logical reasoning—last year. Reading comprehension has been added this year and will have a bearing on the final score of candidates.

CAT 2015 will be conducted in two sessions on 29 November instead of a multiple-day testing window. The exam will be conducted in 136 Cities comprising 650 test centres.
