New Delhi: The model code of conduct, which came into force the day polls in five states were announced in January, has come to an end following constitution of new Assemblies.

In a letter to the cabinet secretary and officials of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur, the Election Commission has said that the model code has “ceased to be in operation with immediate effect" after new Assemblies have been constituted.

As per the data provided by the EC, 179 proposals from the Union government for model code clearance were received by it between 4 January and 2 March. Of these, 24 proposals were cleared on the same day, while 34 proposals were dealt within one day and 39 were cleared in two days.

Only 29 proposals, which required detailed deliberations, were cleared in five days or more. This included the one to advance the presentation of the Union Budget to February one instead of the usual 28 February.

Model code is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission for conduct of political parties, candidates, government and party in power during elections regarding speeches, announcements, election manifestos and general conduct.
