New Delhi: The tension between the ruling and opposition parties took an ugly turn on Wednesday with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of Parliament (MP) getting into an intense verbal spat that reached the verge of a scuffle in the Lok Sabha.

Amid the chaos, TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee accused the Lok Sabha speaker of bias. “You are not the speaker of the BJP, you are not the speaker of (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi," he shouted, triggering vehement protests from the Treasury benches.

When the House resumed, after being adjourned till 12pm, finance minister Arun Jaitley tabled the economic survey.

The TMC party members, who have alleged that a BJP MP abused and threatened their women colleagues, began protesting against the ruling party’s “undemocratic" attack on them. They also said West Bengal was neglected in the railway budget presented on Tuesday.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan repeatedly told the MPs who trooped to the well of the House holding banners to go back to their seats and raise the matter during the slated debate on the rail budget.

“I am warning you go back to seat. No placards can be shown inside the house," the speaker said. However, the protesting MPs did not go back to their seats. MPs from the Left parties were also seen standing in the well of the House raising slogans against rising prices.

In the Rajya Sabha, too, proceedings were disrupted with the opposition raising a protest on the same issues. Congress MP Madhusudan Mistry sought to move a privilege motion against rail minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda for “leaking the budget speech", parts of which appeared in newspapers on Tuesday, he said.
