Election results 2017 live: Jubilation for BJP, consolation for Congress, isolation for AAP

Counting of votes by Election Commission shows BJP has won in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and Congress in Punjab. Here are the latest updates on election results

New Delhi: The Election Commission has started vote counting for assembly election results in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, has started amid tight security. The most riveting contest is expected in Uttar Pradesh, seen as a game-changer and a virtual referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and his reforms agenda.

In Uttar Pradesh, which has a 403-member assembly, 78 counting centres have been set up in 75 districts. Fifteen counting centres have been established in Uttarakhand where the assembly strength is 70 . Votes will be counted at 54 centres in 27 locations set up for election to 117-member Punjab Assembly. In Goa, votes will be counted at two centres in North and South Goa to declare the winners in 40 seats. In Manipur, counting of votes will be held for 60 seats.

6.18 pm: Akhilesh Yadav has resigned as Uttar Pradesh chief minister after Samajwadi Party’s defeat in the assembly elections. Governor Ram Naik has accepted the resignation.

5.58 pm: I have decided to quit politics, Irom Sharmila said after her defeat in Manipur.

5.45 pm: Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh has registered the highest victory margin in the state. He won convincingly with a margin of 52,407 votes as he crushed his nearest rival AAP candidate Balbir Singh.

5.45 pm: Goa chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar has resigned, after suffering a crushing loss in Mandrem constituency of North Goa by around 3,500 votes from Congress candidate Dayanand Sopte.

5.42 pm: Former finance minister and Congress leader P. Chidambaram says the election results have established Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the most dominant person with a countrywide appeal.

5.31 pm: The BJP and its allies have secured two-thirds majority in 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly. The BJP has won 262 seats, its allies Apna Dal (S) eight and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, four.

5.24 pm: Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat, who lost both the assembly seats he contested, has submitted his resignation to Governor K.K. Paul, while attributing the party’s “poor" show in the assembly elections to “flaws in his own leadership".

5.21 pm: “I hope the next government will work better than the Samajwadi Party’s in Uttar Pradesh," outgoing Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav said Saturday, after his party was routed in the state elections results of which were declared Saturday.

5.00 pm: Prime Minister thanks Rahul Gandhi on Twitter after the latter congratulated him on the UP election victory.

4.59 pm: The Congress will form the government in Punjab as it has secured wins in 71 seats and is ahead on three others in the 117-seat assembly. The BJP-SAD combine has been trounced—registering only three wins. The AAP has won 20 seats.

4.56 pm: The BJP has won 239 seats in Uttar Pradesh and is leading on 72 others, while the SP-Congress combine has emerged victorious on 52 seats and is ahead on 15 seats. The BSP has won 14 seats and is leading on six others.

4.38 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledges the support of people that resulted in the BJP’s victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. “Every moment of our time, everything we do is for welfare & wellbeing of the people of India. We believe in the power of 125 crore Indians," Modi tweeted.

He also congratulated Amit Shah and the BJP cadre for the work done in all five states.

4.07 pm: After a landslide win in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Saturday said that the ruling party was going to form government in four states including Goa and Manipur even as he stressed that going forward, it would be a “politics of performance". 3.39 pm: Congress candidate Manpreet Singh Badal won from Bathinda (Urban) seat, deafeating AAP candidate Deepak Bansal by 18,480 votes. Manpreet, estranged nephew of CM Parkash Singh Badal, polled 63,942 votes while Bansal got 45,462 votes.

3.38 pm: Congress candidate Navjot Singh Sidhu has won the Amritsar East seat, defeating nearest rival BJP candidate Rajesh Kumar Honey by 42,809 votes. The cricketer-turned-politician, who joined Congress this year, polled 60,477 votes while Honey got just 17,668 votes.

3.32 pm: Goa has come out on the top when it comes to voters choosing the NOTA option in the latest around of assembly elections, closely followed by Uttarakhand.

3.16 pm: Congress has won the majority in the 117-seat Punjab assembly, by securing victory in 59 seats and is currently leading in 19 constituencies.

3.01 pm: The BJP has more than doubled its vote share in Uttar Pradesh to close to 40% since the last assembly elections though there is a slight drop since the Lok Sabha polls of 2014.

The BJP did even better in Uttarakhand with over 46% vote share, though down from nearly 56% in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

2.54 pm: The Uttar Pradesh election results not only underline Rahul Gandhi’s failure, but also that of Priyanka Gandhi who was part of the poll strategy, Union Minister Smriti Irani said today.

2.25 pm: Latest Election Commission data on Manipur election results shows the BJP has won 11 seats in Manipur and leading in another eight. The Congress has won 14 seats and is ahead on seven. A close fight in the offing for the 60-seat state assembly.

2.21 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congralulates Congress leader Amarinder Singh for the party’s victory in Punjab elections.

2.16 pm: According to latest Election Commission data, the BJP has won 19 seats in Uttar Pradesh and is ahead on 281 others. The SP is leading on 52 seats and has won one so far. The BSP is ahead on 19 seats but is yet to open its account.

2.14 pm: Latest updates showed that Harish Rawat has also lost the Kichha seat in Uttarakhand.

2.10 pm: The BJP termed Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat’s loss as a complete rejection of his leadership. “While Rawat has lost by over 12,000 votes in Haridwar (rural) already, he is heading for a loss in Kichha as well, though with a narrower margin. This is a complete rejection of his leadership," Uttarakhand BJP spokesman Munna Singh Chauhan said. (PTI)

2.07 pm: Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal has defeated Congress’s Captain Amarinder Singh by 22,770 votes for the Lambi seat. Badal polled 66,375 votes while Singh secured 43,605 votes. AAP candidate Jarnail Singh was at the third spot, securing 21,254 votes.

1.52 pm: Union home minister Rajnath Singh’s son Pankaj Singh is ahead of his nearest rival by a margin of over 66,000 in the Noida seat by noon. Going by the counting of votes till noon, Singh polled 99,530 votes, while Samajwadi Party candidate Sunil Choudhary got 32,623 votes.

1.48 pm: Congress oncourse to form the next government in Punjab, winning 16 seats so far and leading in 60 others in the 117-members state assembly.

1.47 pm: “Uttar Pradesh election results surprising, seems EVMs did not accept any vote other than that of BJP’s," said BSP chief Mayawati. “Press any button, vote goes to BJP," alleged Mayawati, after trends showed her party finishing a poor third. She dared PM Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah to ask EC to hold polls in Uttar Pradesh using traditional ballot papers if they are “honest".

1.42 pm: Trends show Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam leading in Rampur and Suar seats in Uttar Pradesh.

1.29 pm: “We accept people’s mandate. All volunteers worked hard. We accept people’s mandate. All volunteers worked hard. Our struggle will continue," AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on the Punjab election results and the drubbing in Goa.

1.18 pm: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal says he will resign on Sunday, even as he congratulated Amarinder Singh for Congress’s victory in Punjab elections. “SAD will discuss reasons for defeat in the Punjab assembly elections," he added.

1.17 pm: Former Goa CM Digambar Kamat (Congress) wins from Margao constituency, defeating BJP candidate Sharmad Pai Raiturcar by 4,900 votes.

12.56 pm: Congress admits that “the bad loss" in Uttar Pradesh hurts, adding that the party needs to do “fundamental restructuring" in the state, calling for hard decisions.

12.54 pm: The BJP and its allies appear poised to sweep all the five assembly segments which together form PM Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency as well as the three adjoining ones falling in the district. As per trends available till noon, the BJP is leading by a comfortable margin in all the three urban seats it had won in 2012—Varanasi Cantt, Varanasi South and Varanasi North.

12.52 pm: BJP president hails the party’s win in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand as a victory of BJP’s ideology and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pro-poor and development policies.

12.32 pm: Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh thanked people of the state for their overwhelming support. “Arvind Kejriwal is like a summer storm which came and has gone," said Singh. “We hope Union Government will recognise demands of Punjab and assist us." Thanking Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Singh said: “The Congress legislature party will meet tomorrow."

12.17 pm: Manipur CM Okram Ibobi Singh wins Thoubal Assembly constituency by over 8,000 votes. Sapam Ranjan Singh and Sapam Ranjan Singh of the BJP also posted wins in the state.

12.07 pm: Goa deputy chief minister Francis D’Souza has defeated his nearest rival Vinod Phadke of the MGP in Mapusa constituency.

12.03 pm: Home minister Rajnath Singh acknowledges the support of the people of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in ensuring BJP’s victory in those states.

11.53 am: Congress Kanwarpal Singh wins Anandpur Sahib seat in Punjab by defeating his nearest BJP rival Parminder Sharma by a margin of 23,881 votes. The seat was earlier held by cabinet minister Madan Mohan Mittal of the BJP.

11.33 am: The BJP and its allies consolidated their position in Uttar Pradesh by surging ahead in 290 of the 403 seats, going by trends available from 386 constituencies.

11.20 am: Congress’s Gurjit Singh Aujla leading by 21,881 votes in Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency. Bypolls here were held with the assembly polls.

11.15 am: BJP leaders today credited “Modi wave" for the party’s strong showing in Uttar Pradesh elections. On the next chief minister in the state, they said the decision will be taken by the BJP parliamentary board and the legislature party in the state soon.

10.40 am: Capt. Amarinder Singh of Congress is leading by 26, 000 votes in Patiala but trailing Parkash Singh Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal by 7,000 votes in Lambi.

10.35 am: Congress’s Navjot Singh Sidhu is leading from Amritsar (East) with 12,300 votes ahead of BJP’s Rajesh Kumar Honey (3,370 votes).

10.33 am: Counting of votes for election results in Uttarakhand shows BJP ahead in 48 constituencies from 62 out of 70 assembly seats.

8.58 am: Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal is leading in Lambi seat, according to early trends. The 89-year-old is locked in a triangular contest with Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh and journalist-turned-politician Jarnail Singh of the AAP.

8.55 am: In Punjab, the SAD-BJP alliance is ahead on one seat, Congress is ahead on eight and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) one.

8.54 am: BJP is now ahead on 38 seats in Uttar Pradesh compared to SP-Congress’s 17 and BSP’s seven.

8.26 am: Counting of votes begins for all 117 assembly seats begins in Punjab. Fifty-four counting centres have been established at 27 locations. More than 14,000 officials have been deployed.

8.23 am: Counting of votes begins in Manipur at 11 centres, amid tight security and prohibitory orders under Section 144.

8.21am: Counting of votes begins in Uttar Pradesh. “Counting of votes for 403 assembly seats started at 8 in the morning. Counting of ballots will take place in all the 75 districts," the State Election Commission said in Lucknow. Postal ballots were being counted first and initial trends are expected to be in by 9 am.

8.17am: Counting begins in Goa. The fate of CM Laxmikant Parsekar (Mandrem constituency) to be decided in the first hour. The postal ballots and votes polled by service voters will be taken up first before calculating the numbers on electronic voting machines (EVMs).

8.07am: Counting begins in all five states.
