Accidental deaths fall 8.5%, suicide rise 1.5% in 2015, says NCRB report

The rate of accidental deaths came down to 32% in 2015 from 36% in 2014

The number of accidental deaths in India fell by 8.5% in 2015 as compared to 2014, according to the latest report on Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) released by the National Crime Records Bureau. There was, however, a marginal increase of 1.5% in the number of suicide cases, although deaths from suicides remained at the same level.

The rate of accidental deaths came down to 32% in 2015 from 36% in 2014.

A total of 4,96,762 traffic accidents were reported in 2015. Within this, road accidents topped with 94% and reported deaths of around 84%. The maximum number of traffic accidents were reported in the month of May, during 3pm to 6pm.

Tamil Nadu topped the list of states with road accidents followed by Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala.

Rural and urban areas accounted for almost an equal number of road accidents. Most accidents occurred near residential areas. Most victims of road accidents were two-wheelers riders.

The rate of suicides has remained constant at 10.8, since 2014, though the number of cases is reported have increased to 1,33,623 in 2015 from 1,31,666 in 2014.

Most suicides were reported in Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Last year also these states occupied the top positions.

One out of every six suicides was committed by a ‘housewife’. ‘Family problems’ and illness were the major reasons, with a share of almost 50% of the total suicides in the country.

In the decade from 2005-2015, accidental deaths showed an increasing trend from 2005 to 2014 with a decline in 2015. While in the case of suicides, an increasing trend was seen till 2011 and then a decline till 2014 and a marginal increase in 2015.
