Basu also mentioned that the world had not entered a phase of competitive devaluation (countries pushing their currencies lower to compete on exports) and that it must desist as far as possible. Amid a global financial meltdown on Monday, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan tried to allay market concerns, saying India had sufficient forex reserves to face any contingency. On 15 August 2014, India had $319 billion in forex reserves.
