Congress declares Priyanka Gandhi chief campaigner for UP polls

The Congress has finally decided to project Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the daughter of party president Sonia Gandhi, as the leader of its campaign for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2017. A report in The Hindu stated that Congress spokesperson in Uttar Pradesh Satya Dev Tripathi said that Priyanka will venture out of Rae Bareli and Amethi, where she has campaigned for the Congress in the past, and hold 150 rallies across UP. The party is also planning to hold a convention in Lucknow in mid-July once party vice-president Rahul Gandhi comes back to India from his vacation abroad. Read more

Congress seeks inputs from traders, labourers for poll manifesto in Punjab

A victory in Punjab, which goes to the polls in 2017, can help the Congress party revive its political fortunes across north India. Realizing the urgency of a win, the party is reaching out to small businesses and unorganized workers, seeking their inputs for the state election manifesto.

The Congress is also conducting an outreach campaign for its workers, dividing the state into six zones with one leader in charge tasked with bringing all the smaller factions on board. Read more

Nearly 120 killed in overnight Baghdad bombings claimed by Islamic State

Nearly 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in two bombings overnight in Baghdad, most of them in a busy shopping area as residents celebrated Ramadan, police and medical officials said on Sunday.

The attack on the shopping area of Karrada is the deadliest since US-backed Iraqi forces last month scored a major victory when it dislodged Islamic State from their stronghold of Fallujah, an hour’s drive west of the capital. It is also the deadliest so far this year. Read more
