New Delhi: Voting for Goa’s 40 assembly seats are going to be held on Saturday, 4 February. The state along with Punjab has become a key battleground arena between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the new kid on the bloc—Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). While most pre-poll surveys are predicting it as a BJP vs AAP contest in Goa, the Indian National Congress Party is the single largest opposition party in the outgoing assembly.

The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), which was part of the ruling alliance with BJP is contesting along with Shiv Sena and other smaller parties this time.

While BJP is hedging its electoral bets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity along with the clean image and record of defence minister and former Goa chief minister Manohar Parikkar, AAP has declared Elvis Gomes as its chief ministerial candidate.

Demonetisation may emerge as the biggest anti-incumbency factor against BJP as the Modi government’s move to demonetise the old Rs500, Rs1,000 currency note since 8 November 2016 has adversely affected tourism, which is a major revenue generator for the coastal state.
