HC issues notice to Rabri Devi
Patna: The Patna High Court Wednesday issued a notice to former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi asking her to clarify her stand on a petition seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against her for allegedly “scandalising and lowering" the authority of judiciary through her election speech in Chapra recently.
A division bench comprising Justices J B Koshy and Ravi Ranjan Sinha ordered issuance of notice against the leader of opposition in the state assembly after hearing the petitioner, Advocate Awadhesh Kumar Pandey.
Pandey, the legal cell convenor of the state’s BJP unit, had on 6 April filed the original criminal miscellaneous case in the division bench seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Rabri Devi.
Pandey in his petition charged RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s wife with having “scandalised and lowered" the authority of judiciary through her election speech in Chapra on 4 April.
The former CM in her speech allegedly said that “the court of law has been sold in the hands of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar".
The court asked Rabri Devi to clarify her position on the petition within a period of 30 days.
Earlier, an FIR was registered against Rabri with Bheldi police station in Chapra on 5 April for her alleged “rude and insulting" remarks against chief minister Nitish Kumar and state JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’.
