India donates $10 mn for Bangladesh flood victims

Dhaka: India has donated $10 million to Bangladesh for the flood and landslide victims, as two subsequent deluges caused havoc inundating half of the country in the past two months, officials said here on 17 September.

Indian High commissioner in Dhaka, Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty handed over the cheque to foreign affairs adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury as a gesture of New Delhi’s sympathy for the Bangladeshi flood victims on 16 September, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

The development coincided with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dhaka and New Delhi on the same day, under South Asian Free Trade Agreement.

The MoU allows duty free import of eight million apparel articles in one calendar year by India from Bangladesh, and without any conditions of sourcing of fabric or port restrictions.
