Who: Narendra Modi

Where: Vadodara, Gujarat

When: 16 May 2014

Said What: That no candidate before him had won with a margin of 5.7 lakh votes in a Lok Sabha election.

Right or Wrong: WRONG. In the 2004 general election, Anil Basu, the CPI (Marxist) candidate from Arambagh in West Bengal, won by a margin of 5,92,502 votes. Basu polled 7,44,464 votes, while his opponent Swapan Kumar Nandi of the BJP could only manage a tally of 1,51,962 votes.

Basu’s impressive showing meant that in a constituency with three candidates, even the runner-up, Nandi, had to forfeit his deposit.
