New Delhi: To offer more specialized health services at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, Union health minister J.P. Nadda on Monday gave the nod for expansion of its trauma centre.

The project, at an estimated cost of 2,700 crore, will have 1,841 beds divided among various specialities.

Expansion of the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, as the AIIMS trauma centre in Delhi is called, will include a centre for digestive diseases, a centre for endocrinology, a centre for ear, nose and throat (ENT), a spine centre, a bone marrow transplant facility and a kidney transplant facility.

Right now, it is equipped to handle only accident cases. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has already allotted 15 acres of land near the existing building.

“The expansion of the trauma centre along with the setting up of AIIMS in states is part of the sustained efforts by the ministry to significantly improve the health infrastructure in the country," Nadda said.

Mint reported on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the health ministry to expedite work on four AIIMS in various states and make them operational by 2019, a year ahead of schedule.

The four new AIIMS will come up at Nagpur in Maharashtra, Mangalagiri in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, Kalyani in West Bengal and Rae Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

The new premises will be based on a green building concept. The building will have rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment facilities, and use native species of shrubs and trees having low water demand for landscaping.

As far as material for building is concerned, it will have ready mix concrete with more than 30% fly ash content. The building will have dust and noise control features.
