Nuclear power may rise 100-fold by 2050: PM

New Delhi: India’s nuclear power generation capacity may increase more than 100-fold over the next 40 years as the nation reduces dependence on fossil fuels blamed for global warming.

“If we can manage our programme well, our strategy could yield 470,000MW of power by 2050," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told a conference on peaceful uses of atomic energy in New Delhi on Tuesday. “This will sharply reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and will be a major contribution to global efforts to combat climate change."
