Poonam Azad, wife of suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad, joins AAP
Poonam Azad said alleged that she was mistreated by the senior leadership of BJP
New Delhi: Poonam Azad, a former member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and wife of suspended BJP member of Parliament Kirti Azad, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday, ending months of speculation.
“I see a future, especially for the youth, in AAP," she said after joining the party.
She alleged that union finance Arun Jaitley was part of the reason she quit the BJP.
“He did not give us poll tickets despite promising many times. Also, my husband, Kirti Azad, was suspended when he raised his voice against corruption. BJP is maintaining a dual stand," she alleged.
In December, Kirti Azad, a former India Test cricketer complained of corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) at a time finance minister Arun Jaitley headed the body. A BJP Lok Sabha member from Bihar, Azad was issued a show-cause notice for indiscipline and defying party orders not to involve the finance minister in the issue.
Poonam Azad is joining AAP ahead of assembly polls in Punjab, where the party is contesting elections for the first time. Senior AAP leaders say that she is likely to play an important role in the elections due in 2017.
“Poonam Azad will play an important role in the upcoming Punjab polls and after discussions she will be given an important responsibility in the party," senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said.
