Mumbai Rains LIVE: Death toll rises to 10, Shiv Sena, BJP spar over flood relief work

Mumbai saw less rain today even as schools and colleges remained shut due to floods. Here are the latest updates and developments

Mumbai: After incessant downpour threw life out of gear, disrupting road, rail and air traffic, Mumbai braced for another day of hardships even as let up in rains on Tuesday night brought some relief on Wednesday.

Schools and colleges remained closed amid floods and indications of a fresh spell of heavy showers in the megapolis. The city and its suburbs virtually had a public holiday on Wednesday with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis advising people to stay back home unless there is an emergency. “However, the essential services and critical staff in the government will be on duty today,” Fadnavis said.

Here are the latest updates and developments:

■ Torrential rain and the subsequent flooding has claimed at least 10 lives in Mumbai and the neighbouring districts of Palghar and Thane since Tuesday, the local police said on Wednesday.

While nine persons were washed away in separate incidents in Mumbai and the two adjoining districts, another man lost his life in a wall-collapse incident in Ghatkopar in Mumbai. “In Mumbai, the incidents were reported from Dahisar, Kandivli, Malad and Dadar areas,” a senior police official said. ■ Around 450 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been mobilized for deployment in Mumbai, where normal life has been disrupted due to heavy rains. Three NDRF teams, already prepositioned in Mumbai, were immediately supplemented by sending more teams, a home ministry statement said. (PTI)

■ Shiv Sena, which controls the BMC, today accused the BJP, its alliance partner in the state government, of taking “undue credit” for the relief work being carried out by the Uddhav Thackeray-led party. A Yuva Sena functionary has tweeted a photo claiming that the BJP has “photoshopped” the Sena’s name to take “undue credit” for the relief work being done by his party.

Responding to the tweet posted by Yuva Sena social media consultant Sagar Pardeshi, the youth wing president and Thackeray’s son Aaditya asked the BJP to stop such activities and concentrate on relief work instead. (PTI)

■ Authorities in Mumbai said at least five people had died since the intense rainfall began on Tuesday. (PTI)

■ The Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here registered 331.4 mm rainfall on Tuesday, the heaviest since the July 26, 2005 record of 944 mm, which had caused the worst havoc in decades in the city. This is also the highest rainfall in a day in August since 1997. It was second only to 346.2 mm of rainfall registered on August 23, 1997, the data showed.

The Colaba observatory of the IMD registered 110 mm of rainfall yesterday, it said.

“The precipitation measured between 8.30 am of August 29 to 8.30 am of August 30 revealed that Santacruz weather station has received 331.4 mm rainfall, while the Colaba observatory received 110 mm during the same period,” the IMD said.

The neighbouring Thane city received 247 mm rainfall, while the downpour measured in Palghar was 280 mm, it said.

On Tuesday afternoon, the IMD had issued a forecast that Mumbai region would get more than 250 mm rainfall. (PTI)

■ Maharashtra Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat has appealed to people stranded in south Mumbai for unavailability of transport following heavy rains, to take shelter in his official residence for time being.

In his appeal made through Facebook, the BJP leader, who hails from Pune, said that people stranded in areas such as Fort, and at Mantralaya can rest or stay in his official residence ‘Dnyaneshwari’, located at Malabar Hill, till the situation shows improvement. (PTI)

■ Mumbai police found a person unconscious in a car near Gandhi Market Sion this morning, was rushed to the hospital but declared brought dead. Sion police has registered Accidental Death Report in the case. (ANI)

The victim identified as a 30-year-old lawyer Priyen, HT reports.

■ Four persons, including a three-year-old girl, were washed away in separate incidents following heavy rains in neighbouring Palghar district, near Thane, police said. Out of the four, body of the minor girl has been recovered so far, Palghar police said.

“The three-year-old victim was travelling on a motorcycle with her kin. When their vehicle reached Waghoba Khind, it skidded and the girl fell into the flood water. She was washed away and her body was recovered later,” police said.

In another incident, a youth fell into a swollen nullah in Palghar town and was washed away. His body is yet to be recovered, they said. (PTI)

■ In separate incidents in Virar and Vasai townships in the district, two persons fell into the gushing waters of nullahs and were swept away.

“Their bodies are yet to be recovered,” police said. In Thane, body of an unidentified man aged around 35 years, was found in a nullah near Jail Talao around 9 am, the regional disaster management cell (RDMC) said.

“The body was fished out and sent for a post-mortem,” the officials said. Thane city received 340 mm rains throughout the day yesterday, the weather bureau of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said. (PTI)

■ 3 NDRF teams prepositioned in Mumbai supplemented by more teams from Pune, additional teams kept as stand by at all NDRF Battalion locations. NDRF teams have been put on high alertand are keeping close watch over situation in Mumbai, ANI reports.

■ Renowned gastroenterologist of the Bombay Hospital Dr. Deepak Amrapurkar went missing near the Elphinstone Road station following heavy rains which lashed the megapolis, the police said today. 58-year-old Amarapurkar had left for home last evening by his car but due to water logging on the road he asked his driver to drop him near the Elphinstone Road station and started walking towards his residence, a senior police official said. ■ Chief PRO, Northern Railway says that 16 trains commencing on 30 August and one each on 31 August and 1 September cancelled due to operational reasons & heavy rains in Maharashtra.

■ On the Central Railway’s Harbour and Main lines, local services were running very slow and getting held up at stations as tracks remain submerged at various points. (PTI)

■ Shiv Sena, which rules the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on Wednesday complimented the civic body for ensuring that the situation did not “go out of hand”. The saffron party has been ruling the cash-rich Mumbai civic body since over two decades.

“The BMC’s preparedness to tackle the natural calamity ensured that the situation did not go out of hand. The civic body should be complimented for this. Even after heavy rains, no big untoward incident has taken place,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

“Mumbai and Maharashtra have always received the blessings of Ganpati. We believe that God will ease this trouble as well,” the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said. (PTI)

■ Mumbai police: “If your car is out of fuel/ stranded #Diall100 or 8454999999 or tweet us for free towing till the nearest fuel pump or garage.”

■ IMD local forecast for Mumbai city and neighbourhood valid until the morning of 30/08/2017 for 24 hours: Intermittent rain or showers with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places likely and extremely heavy at one or two places likely to occur in city and suburbs.

Maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be 28 deg. c & 24 deg. c respectively.

■ Regional forecast: Moderate to heavy rainfall likely to occur at most places in the districts of Konkan-Goa. Moderate rainfall likely to occur at many places in the districts of central Maharashtra. Light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at a few places in the districts of Marathwada.

Meanwhile, light showers begin in eastern and western suburbs and heavy rainfall in Thane, HT reports.

■ Air India spokesperson says all charges waived on all tickets issued on or before 28 and 29 August for travel to and from Mumbai has now been extended till 31 August.

■ The Western Naval Command has made arrangements to provide shelter to stranded Mumbaikars at Colaba, Worli and Ghatkopar,” a spokesperson said. The Indian navy has also opened community kitchens providing food at Churchgate, Byculla, Parel/ CST/Worli/Tardeo, Mumbai Central/Dadar/ Mankhurd/Chembur/Malad/ Ghatkopar.

■ Man dies after falling into an open manhole on Dadar’s Matkar road. Police register case on account of eyewitness, ANI reports.

■ Mumbai police said in a tweet: “1st Train commenced from CST (up) at 8.22 harbour Iine.8.32 CST to Karjat08.08 Kurla to CST.”

■ Airlines have extended waiver of charges for cancelled tickets for flights in and out of Mumbai due to the heavy rains in the city. Read more

■ Mumbai’s famed ‘dabbawalas’ today cancelled their delivery of over two lakh tiffins to office goers in the city in view of the disruption of suburban rail services. Dabbawalas, who had ventured out on their task yesterday, returned home only this morning after being stranded at railway stations.

“The over 5,000 ‘dabbawalas’ who deliver around two lakh ‘dabbas’ (tiffins) a day won’t be able to do so today as they returned only this morning after being stranded at railway stations,” Subhash Talekar, spokesperson of the Mumbai Dabbawala Association told PTI. “We will resume our services tomorrow,” he said. ■ Four persons were washed away in separate incidents in Mumbai following torrential rains since yesterday, the police said.

The incidents were reported from Dahisar, Kandivli, Malad and Dadar areas, a senior police official said.

While two were washed away in nullahs, one was washed away in a drain and the other was washed away during Ganesh idol immersion proceedings, he added. (PTI)

■ In another incident, one person Rameshwar Tiwari was killed after the wall of a power sub-station fell on his house in Asalpha village in suburban Ghatkopar, police said. His 35-year-old wife and nine-year-old son sustained injuries in the incident that took place in the early hours, they added. (PTI)

■ Operations are normal at Mumbai Airport as of now: Airport PRO, ANI reports.

■ The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has said rains in the megapolis, which came to a standstill following incessant downpour, are likely to be lesser today. “The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall for today. However, it is likely to be lesser compared to yesterday,” a senior SDMA official said. Torrential rains pounded the metropolis throughout the day yesterday.

■ Suburban train services on the Central Railway (CR) mainline resumed Wednesday morning after remaining suspended for nearly 20 hours due to heavy downpour. The first train left the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) for Kalyan at 7.26am, an official said. (PTI)

■ The Navy has opened community kitchens and food counters at various locations in the megapolis to provide relief to commuters stranded in torrential rainfall. “Community kitchens providing food opened at Churchgate, Byculla, Parel, CST, Worli and Tardeo, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Mankhurd, Chembur, Malad and Ghatkopar,” a Navy spokesperson said. “Food counters opened at various locations in Mumbai for stranded commuters,” the spokesperson tweeted. ■ Mumbai received 298 mm of rainfall over a period of 9 hours on Tuesday, nine times more rain than the average, an IMD official said. ■ Three persons, including two children were killed in Mumbai while a 32-year-old woman and a teenage girl died in rain-related incidents in Thane Tuesday, police had said. Even as the city was pummelled by heavy rains, people in Mumbai opened their homes and hearts to strangers, offering assistance to those stranded in the rains that brought the megapolis to its knees.
