Gandhinagar: Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017 edition saw memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for a whopping 25,500 projects signed in the last two days. While this was higher than the number of MoUs signed at the 2015 Vibrant Summit, the government did not disclose the investment figures for this time. In 2015, MoUs worth Rs25 lakh crore were announced by the state government.

“The event saw one of the largest gatherings of heads of government, heads of state, corporate leaders, Nobel laureates, economists and academicians witnessed by the country. The biennial event organized by the Government of Gujarat highlighted the growth story of Gujarat and the vast opportunities that the state has to offer," the state government said in a media statement.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the biennial event at the Mahatma Gandhi Convention Centre at Gandhinagar, chief minister Vijay Rupani said the event would help establish the state as a gateway to the Indian economy.

Among those who signed agreements at the summit were Airbus (helicopter, defence cluster), Adani group (cement, water, ports), ADAG group (defence sector), Mahindra Lifespaces (industrial park), Welspun group, MRF Tyres (tyre manufacturing facility), Amazon India (tribal development), Tyson Glass (fibre-glass making factory) and Tsinghshan Steel (steel making factory in Kutch).

Rupani said the summit would enhance Gujarat’s reputation as an investment destination as delegates coming from across the globe would go back to their countries as brand ambassadors of the state.

Speaking at the valedictory event, defence minister Manohar Parikar said the summit is a great example for other states to create environment for ease of doing business.

Deputy chief minister Nitin Patel gave sector-wise figures of MoUs and said that of the total 25578 MoUs signed during the past three days, as many as 52 were amounting to Rs4,000 crore and above. According to Patel, compared to the last edition of Vibrant Gujarat, 2500 more MoUs were signed.

In the last seven Vibrant Gujarat summits, MoUs of at least Rs85 lakh crore have been signed. While the state government has claimed a conversion rate of 70%, Manish Doshi, spokesperson of the opposition Congress party has said the actual conversion rate would be less than 10%.
