Water level in 91 major reservoirs at 15%
The water storage is 46% short of the stock available during the corresponding period last year, says the water resources ministry
New Delhi: The water level in 91 major reservoirs in the country remained at around 15% of their total capacity for the second consecutive week, the government said on Friday.
According to Union water resources ministry, 23.202 billion cubic metre (BCM) of water was available in these reservoirs for the week ending on 23 June. For the week ending on 16 June, according to the ministry, the water available in these reservoirs was 23.786 billion cubic metre (BCM).
The storage is 46% short of the stock available during corresponding period last year and 25% less than the 10-year average levels for the same span of time, the ministry said in a statement.
The total capacity of these reservoirs is 157.799 BCM. Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka have reported lower levels of water in major reservoirs compared to last year.
Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh have reported better storage vis-a-vis last year for the corresponding period. The estimated water storage capacity of all reservoirs in the country is 253.388 BCM. Thirty-seven of the major reservoirs have hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW.
