SC asks centre to take stock of sterilization processes

Court gives govt six weeks for update on the compliance of its directions and four weeks for the disbursal of funds

New Delhi: In light of the recent sterilization camp tragedy in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Union government to take stock of its compliance with certain directions given by it in 2009.

The social justice bench, with justices Madan B. Lokur and U.U. Lalit, asked the central government to prepare a chart on the compliance of state governments with the nine directions of the apex court in relation to sterilization facilities.

Further, the court asked solicitor general Ranjit Kumar to find out if the money allocated under the Family Planning Indemnity Scheme had been disbursed to states and subsequently to those families where sterilization processes had caused complications or, in certain cases, death.

The court has given the Union government six weeks for the update on the compliance of its directions and four weeks for the disbursal of funds.

The government told the court that it had complied with the court’s directions and published certain standards for sterilisation camps.
