With 401 households and a population of 2,974, with dismal gender ratios and employment challenges, Jayapur is one of the 1,259 villages in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district. But with Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India and member of Parliament from Varanasi, “adopting" it under the recently launched Sansaad Adarsh Gram Yojana, it now stands apart, likely to be watched and tracked. This Union government scheme calls for every MP to identify and develop three villages in their constituency into “model villages"—one by 2016 and two more by 2019—by marshalling the 5 crore fund allocated to them, existing government schemes and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. The handful of recent socioeconomic numbers available for Jayapur from the 2011 Census highlights some of the challenges faced by this village.
