CBI makes another arrest in luxury cars import case
CBI says it has arrested TCP MD V.R. Venkatachalam in a case pertaining to the import of luxury cars
New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday said that it had arrested V.R. Venkatachalam, managing director of Chennai-based TCP Ltd, in a case pertaining to the import of luxury cars.
A CBI spokesperson said via a text message that Venkatachalam “had allegedly purchased eight cars" from Alex C. Joseph, the main accused in the case.
This follows a CBI chargesheet against 12 accused in the case, which was filed on 1 May. Joseph was arrested in February this year.
The case came to light when in March last year the CBI raided 17 locations in Chennai, including the residences of M.K. Stalin and former Union fertilizer minister M.K. Alagiri, the sons of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M. Karunanidhi, and had seized 33 luxury cars.
Among those whose premises were raided was N. Srinivasan, the former president of the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI).
