New Delhi: India on Monday said violence cannot and should be allowed to determine the course of political events in Bangladesh, adding that “the democratic processes must be allowed to take their own course in Bangladesh".

“Elections in Bangladesh on 5 January were a constitutional requirement. They are a part of the internal and constitutional process of Bangladesh. It is for the people of Bangladesh to decide their own future and choose their representatives in a manner that responds to their aspirations," foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said in response to a question.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League is set to form the next government after securing over three-fourth majority in the controversial polls marred by deadly clashes, a low turnout and a boycott by opposition parties.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led 18 party alliance boycotted the polls and spearheaded a violent campaign to thwart the elections along with its key ally fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami. Twenty-one people were killed in poll-related violence on Sunday.

According to the unofficial results, Awami League candidates won in 107 seats and its ally Jatiya Party has so far won in 16 out of 300 constituencies. Having won 127 seats uncontested, the party has now more than 230 seats in the house, which gives it a clear three-fourth majority in the 10th parliament—much like it was in the ninth parliament.
