New Delhi: Ever since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government came to power in Delhi in February, many of its MLAs have come under the scanner for law and order violations. The latest was AAP legislator from East Delhi Manoj Kumar, who was arrested on Thursday in an alleged cheating and land grabbing case.

The AAP, however, is accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre for targeting it. “Continuing with its vendetta politics and efforts to score revenge with the people of Delhi for drubbing the BJP in the Assembly elections, Delhi Police under Prime Minister Narendra Modi today arrested Aam Aadmi Party MLA Manoj Kumar. The party strongly condemns the action and terms it as below the belt politics of BJP losing ground support in Delhi and elsewhere in the country," said AAP in a statement late on Thursday.

On 9 June, police arrested law minister Jitender Singh Tomar for alleged cheating, forgery and forgery with intent to cheat and criminal conspiracy on the suspicion that he possessed a fake degree. On 6 July, Tomar’s judicial custody was extended until 20 July.

In the same month, Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti was summoned by the Delhi Commission for Women after his wife filed a complaint of domestic violence against him.

AAP MLA from Tilak Nagar Jarnail Singh was booked in April for allegedly assaulting an engineer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and also obstructing him from carrying out his duties. Singh has rejected the charges.

Another AAP MLA from Uttam Nagar Naresh Balyan was called in for questioning a day after the election result was announced in February after the police recovered 8,000 bottles of liquor from a warehouse in his constituency.

Senior party leader Sanjay Singh said while the Delhi Police, under Modi, deemed it fit to arrest a sitting MLA from Delhi under alleged charges of forgery, the government sees no harm in having ministers accused of rape and other heinous crimes.

Delhi is a union territory with special status where matters of law and order and land come under the central government.
