Donald Trump vs James Robart: Here’s how global media reacted

New Delhi: Donald Trump’s trademark controversy-laden late-night tweets are in news again. This time, the US President has derided the Seattle federal district court judge James Robart for lifting the travel ban imposed on seven Muslim-majority countries and suspension of US refugee programme. Trump tweeted, “The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!"

Judge Robart’s order has dealt a major blow to the Trump regime’s immigration ban while granting several states’ request for a temporary restraining order against the ban. An appeals court in California reportedly refused on Sunday to reinstate the ban.

Appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, Robart is considered an apolitical person with respect for law and fairness. Not surprisingly, Trump’s continuous attack on him has evoked sharp reactions in the international media with most of them describing it as an attack on American system of checks and balances.

Here are some of those reactions from the international media on Trump immigration ban and controversial remarks against Judge Robart:

■ The Economist: “The rising drama over the new president’s immigration policy has a dark backdrop: his apparent rejection of the principle that the judiciary is a co-equal branch of America’s government whose decisions—no matter how unpalatable they may seem to him—must be followed… His (Trump) query betrays an unfamiliarity with a basic principle of American constitutionalism. “It is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department", wrote John Marshall, America’s fourth chief justice, in 1803, “to say what the law is".

■ The Wall Street Journal: “The damage from President Trump’s order on immigration and refugees continues to compound, now escalating into a conflict with the judicial branch. There’s enough bad behaviour and blame to go around, but Mr. Trump didn’t need to court this altercation."

■ Foreign Policy: “Trump has in one executive order made it exponentially harder for the United States to achieve its most critical foreign-policy objective: the reduction of terrorist threats to the U.S. homeland... The legal, moral, and humanitarian problems with Trump’s order are huge, and its rejection is incumbent on all of us. But from a strictly security-driven perspective, the downsides are striking as well. The United States cannot keep its finger on the evolution of global threats alone. Poking its partners in the eye is not only wrong but shortsighted and dangerous."

■ The New York Times: “President Trump’s executive order on immigration has prompted a constitutional showdown that could leave a mark on the law for generations and seems likely to end in a landmark Supreme Court decision."

■ Guardian: “As a candidate, Trump had criticised federal judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was overseeing a case against his Trump University—arguing Curiel could not be impartial because of his Mexican heritage and Trump’s vow to crack down on Mexican immigrants. But by lashing as president, Trump’s anti-judiciary stance takes on new importance: it hits at the very heart of the checks and balances system meant to protect the country from government abuse of power."

The Washington Post: “America’s new president may not care about upholding the traditions of his office. He also may recklessly disregard his predecessors’ tireless work to build vital global alliances. But when the president tries to undermine the legitimacy of the federal judiciary, he must be told in short order that the White House is picking a fight it will not win. For the sake of the country, let us hope the attacks on “so-called" Judge James Robart were merely reckless and not politically calculated. Because speeding further down that path would end in an ugly constitutional crash."

■ CNN: “An independent federal judiciary is our last, best hope at preventing Trump from violating the US Constitution and illegally grabbing power. And Trump has to understand that, hence his attempt to undermine it. The President truly appears to be leading a master class in transforming the United States into a dictatorship. Trump—and it’s fair to assume it is by design—has sought to undermine anyone or anything that tries to counter him, " writes Dean Obeidallah, a former attorney and columnist.
