Could Sushil Kumar go to Rio? Delhi HC verdict on Monday
Sushil's counsel says the country calls for some kind of a written policy on selection and in the absence of such a policy, attempts must be made to maximise the interests of the country
New Delhi: The Delhi high court will on Monday rule on wrestler Sushil Kumar’s plea for a trail bout to choose India’s representative in the 74-kg freestyle wrestling category at the Rio Olympics.
Kumar, who has two Olympic golds under his belt, albeit in a lower weight category that is no longer part of the Olympics, wants a shot at being the country’s representative.
Narsingh Yadav, by virtue of winning the slot or “quota" for India in the category at the Olympic games (thanks to his performance in the World Championship in Las Vegas that Kumar did not participate in) believes that he should be the representative.
India usually sends the wrestler who has won the “quota" although there have been exceptions.
Amit Sibal, counsel for Sushil Kumar told the court, “The country calls for some kind of a written policy on selection and in the absence of such a policy, attempts must be made to maximise the interests of the country."
He added that Kumar’s non-participation at the World Championship last year could not be held as a reason for his disqualification from the Olympics this year. The Olympic Games are scheduled to be held from 5 August.
Sushil Kumar has been omitted from the preparatory camp for the Rio games as only quota place-earning wrestlers have been included. Yadav’s name figures in the men’s 74-kg freestyle division for the camp based on his performance at the World Championship last year.
The verdict is likely to be pronounced on 6 June.
