Privacy rights vs national security needs to be debated: H.L. Dattu
Dattu says the move towards achieving national security has often led to 'lesser accountability and transparency'
New Delhi: Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu on Wednesday raised concerns over privacy rights in the context of national security, saying the matter deserved an “extensive and rigorous national debate."
Dattu said the move towards achieving national security has often led to “lesser accountability and transparency".
“This extension of executive powers is at its extreme when it comes to matters of technology-based surveillance...The terms on which surveillance can be carried out using rapid innovations and technology, the protections and recourse available to those who are placed under surveillance, the storage and information gathered through such surveillance are all matters that require extensive and rigorous national debate," Dattu said.
He was speaking at Law Day celebrations at the Supreme Court, commemorating the day when the draft Constitution was adopted by the constituent assembly.
