Hyderabad: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the ruling party in Telangana, on Friday captured Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) with a landslide—with its party candidates winning 99 wards out of 150.
TRS is way above the magic figure of 76 of the 150 seats, to claim the mayor’s seat in India’s fourth biggest city.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) party headed by Asaduddin Owaisi is close to winning 41 wards, mostly in parts of the old city, its traditional stronghold given a large Muslim population.
The Congress which won 50 seats in 2009 and captured GHMC with the help of MIM was leading in just two wards.
TRS supremo and state chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, described TRS win in GHMC polls as “historic and unprecedented.”
“No party has ever formed local government on its own in Hyderabad, we will try to implement promises made in manifesto,” Rao said.
Hyderabad was declared the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till 2024 when the two states were split in June 2014 following a statehood movement spearheaded by the TRS.
