New Delhi: Baijayant “Jay" Panda comes from a prominent business family and is a member of the Lok Sabha, representing Kendrapara constituency in Odisha from where he won the election in 2009 as a candidate of the Biju Janata Dal. He is running for re-election to Parliament from the same constituency.

The Panda family has wide-ranging business interests—from media and communications to legal and financial services, aviation to real estate, infrastructure, coal, mining and power.

Politics and business have always been interlinked in India (much like they are in many other countries). There are businessmen in politics. And there are politicians in business. There is nothing wrong in this—as long as there is no conflict of interest. Often, though, politicians do not disclose the holdings they and their immediate family have in companies. Thanks to the ministry of corporate affairs’ powerful database, it is possible to unearth all the holdings of politicians we have picked. The purpose of this exercise is purely information dissemination: voters have a right to know the business interests of people they elect.Mint was helped by a forensics firm in this exercise. We also reached out to the politicians covered to cross-check the data. We kick off the series with details of BJD MP Jay Panda’s business interests.Over the next 45 days, Mint will run similar data on around 100 politicians. Ltd, Odisha Television Ltd and Orissa Telefims Pvt. Ltd, to name a few. NSR-PE Mauritius Llc and Orissa State Electronics Development Corp. Ltd own stakes in Ortel Communications.

Apart from the family holdings, Jay Panda is a director on the board of Quippo Telecom Infrastructure Ltd.
