New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday upheld a ban on using bulls and bullocks for entertainment, including in the Jallikattu festival in Tamil Nadu and bullock cart races in Maharashtra.
A bench led by justice K.S. Radhakrishnan held that Jallikattu, bullock cart race and other such events violate the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, saying, “Bulls cannot be used as performing animals, either for the Jallikattu events or bullock-cart races in the states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or elsewhere in the country.”
The environment ministry, under former environment minister Jairam Ramesh, had banned the use of bulls as performing animals in 2011. Other animals in Ramesh’s notification included bears, monkeys, tigers, panthers and lions. Earlier this year, the ministry backtracked on the ban, but the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) remained a party in the case.
