New Delhi: India on Thursday condemned a terrorist attack in London’s Westminster area a day earlier in which five people, including the attacker, were killed and at least 40 injured after an attacker drove a car along a pavement and stabbed a policeman before he was shot dead by police in the grounds of the British Parliament.

“Deeply saddened by the terror attack in London. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a Twitter post on Thursday morning.

“At this difficult moment, India stands with UK in the fight against terrorism. @theresa_may @Number10Gov," said Modi in another post.

In another Twitter post late on Wednesday, India’s foreign ministry spokesman Gopal Baglay said: “India strongly condemns Westminster terrorist incident & condoles loss of life. No place in democracies & civilised societies for terrorism."

The London Metropolitan Police in a statement described Wednesday’s incident as a “marauding terrorist attack." Three of the victims were among those hit by the car as it sped across Westminster Bridge before crashing into railings just outside parliament, according to a Reuters news report.

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the attack as “sick and depraved".

“The location of this attack was no accident," she said in a statement outside her 10 Downing Street office late in the Wednesday evening.

Wednesday’s attack is being regarded as the deadliest attack in London since four British Islamists killed 52 commuters and themselves in suicide bombings on the London Underground metro train system and a bus in July 2005.

It also took place as Belgium was marking the first anniversary of twin attacks by Islamist militants that killed 32 people in Brussels.
